Top 5 North Atlanta Spots to Celebrate Fall

Fall is in the air and there are so many things to do in North Georgia to celebrate the season. From hikes to trains to waterfalls; here are my top 5 places North of Atlanta to celebrate the season.

The Sawnee Mountain Preserve in Cumming is 963 acres with hiking trails, Indian Seats, a tree canopy classroom, playground, two picnic pavilions, climbing area, amphitheater and visitor center. The trails and visitor center are open daily from 8:30 to 5:00. 4075 Spot Rd. Cumming GA 30040

The Buford Corn Maze is a great place for family fun. Voted one of the best corn mazes in the country by Country Living. Activities include the maze, haunted forest, hay rides, photo ops galore, pumpkins, animals, slides and even a corn box for the kids (big box of corn to play in). October Hours Monday- Thursday 10:00-7:00, Friday-Saturday 10:00-midnight, Sunday 10:00-10:00. 4470 Bennett Road, Buford, GA 30519.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway starts at the historic depot in downtown Blue Ridge. Riders take a four hour, 26 mile roundtrip journey along the Toccoa River through the North Georgia countryside. The first leg of the journey takes riders on a one hour trip to the quaint sister towns of McCaysville, GA and Copperhill, TN, nestled deep in the mountains on each state’s line. Passengers enjoy a two-hour layover before taking the one-hour return trip through the scenic forest and back to the depot in Blue Ridge.

Amicolola Falls State Park A nature lover’s wonderland, it’s only 8 miles from the Appalachian Trail and within the Chattahoochee National Forest. The park is named after its most treasured feature, Amicalola Falls – a magnificent 729-foot waterfall that’s the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Hours from 7:00-10:00 daily. 418 Amicalola Falls State Park Rd, Dawsonville, GA 30534

Octoberfest in Helen, GA Helen has the longest Octoberfest in the United States, which runs from September 9 through November 7. Helen’s Festhalle houses the event which includes German-style bands, beer, brats and Lederhosen! The drive to Helen is beautiful and it offers quirky fun for the whole family! Weekdays 6:00-10:30, Friday 6:00-12:00, Saturday 1:00-12:00 and Sunday 1:00-7:00.
